A 66-year-old man from Port au Port West has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a snowmobile incident that occurred last month, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The investigation began on February 21, 2025, when Bay St. George RCMP responded to a report of an injured snowmobiler on Gravel’s Pond in Port au Port around 4:30 p.m. The snowmobile operator had fallen from his machine after it came to a stop, sustaining serious injuries that were not consistent with a typical fall.

The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit (MCU) West took over the investigation. On February 25, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Front Road in Port au Port West, seizing several items related to the case.

On March 16, 2025, the MCU arrested Wayne Harold Hynes at his home in Port au Port West. He was charged with attempted murder and held in police custody overnight. Hynes appeared in provincial court via teleconference on March 17 and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18, 2025.

The RCMP is continuing its investigation and has sought public assistance. They have requested that anyone who traveled along the isthmus, commonly known as the gravels, in Port au Port between 3:57 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. on February 21 check for possible dash cam footage and provide it to the police.

Individuals with information about the incident are encouraged to contact the Bay St. George RCMP at 709-643-2118.
