Wintry Mix to Impact Newfoundland and Labrador Starting Monday

A winter storm is set to move into western Newfoundland and parts of Labrador on Monday afternoon, bringing a mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain.

Snow will first arrive along the west coast of Newfoundland and into western Labrador before transitioning to mixed precipitation later in the day. By Monday night, many areas of the Island will see snow change to ice pellets and freezing rain. As temperatures rise, precipitation will eventually turn to rain by Tuesday morning.

The heaviest freezing rain is expected along Newfoundland’s south coast, where ice accretion of 5 to 10 mm is possible, creating hazardous travel conditions. Meanwhile, the west coast of the Island could see snowfall totals of up to 5 cm before the transition.

Western Labrador is expected to remain cold enough for significant snowfall, with 15 to 20 cm possible before the system moves out. Strong winds accompanying the storm may lead to reduced visibility and blowing snow in some areas.

Residents are advised to prepare for slippery roads, potential power outages due to ice buildup, and rapidly changing conditions as the storm progresses. Travelers should monitor forecasts and be ready for delays.
