Gander, NL — With just 50 days left until the opening ceremonies, excitement is soaring in Gander as preparations ramp up for the 2025 Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador (SONL) Provincial Summer Games. A spirited “50 Days Out” celebration and information session was held last night at Evangel Pentecostal Community Church, bringing the community together for a heartfelt kickoff to the final countdown.
The evening was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and purpose as athletes, families, volunteers, and community leaders gathered to celebrate what’s shaping up to be one of the most memorable events of the summer. Guests were greeted with refreshments before diving into a full agenda featuring speeches, sport demos, and community engagement opportunities.
A highlight of the night was a generous donation presented by NAV CANADA, whose contribution will help ensure the Games’ success. The crowd also heard moving remarks from Gander Deputy Mayor Bettina Ford, Games Organizing Committee Co-Chairs Tara Pollett and Geoff Goldsworthy, and athlete Sarah Brown, who offered a personal and inspiring perspective on the significance of the Games.
Incoming Executive Director Bobby Gamba electrified the room with his speech, emphasizing the unifying power of sport and community, and sharing his excitement about welcoming athletes from across the province to Gander from July 4–6.
The session also offered practical insights, including venue details, sports schedules, and a call for volunteers — which received an enthusiastic response. Volunteer sign-up stations buzzed with activity as locals pledged their support.
Adding to the spirit of inclusion and fun, attendees had a chance to try out some of the Games’ featured sports — including bocce, javelin, and mini putt — with help from the talented athletes of the Gander Wings program, who demonstrated their skills and proudly promoted the event.
