Multiple wildfires across the province prompted swift action from wildfire response teams, with officials reporting containment and continued suppression efforts.
In Lewisporte, a fire that broke out earlier today has now been contained. Two water bombers and a bird dog aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze, supported by ground crews from Forestry and the local fire department. Power was temporarily interrupted to several homes in the area to allow the aircraft to operate safely near structures.
Meanwhile, in Small Point, a fire approximately five hectares in size was successfully suppressed with the help of one water tanker and one helicopter. Forestry staff and the local fire department responded quickly and will remain on scene throughout the day tomorrow. No homes were lost, there were no power interruptions, and Route 70 has been re-opened. A small number of residents were evacuated as a precaution.
In Chance Harbour, firefighting efforts continue under difficult conditions. Although fire behaviour was challenging, a favourable wind direction helped redirect the fire away from communities. Three water bombers, a bird dog, helicopters performing bucket drops, and ground crews focused on protecting cabins and community areas. Despite these efforts, several additional cabins were lost.
The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre remains activated at Level 1 – Enhanced Monitoring, coordinating with emergency management partners and providing updates to affected communities.
Residents and cabin owners are urged to monitor official government channels for the latest updates:
