Provincial Government Provides Update on Wildfires; Premier Signals Harsher Penalties for Illegal Fires

Premier John Hogan, alongside Minister of Health and Community Services Dr. John Haggie, Minister of Labrador Affairs Lisa Dempster, and other government officials, held a press conference this morning to update the public on the ongoing wildfire situation in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Premier Hogan emphasized the seriousness of the current wildfire season and raised concerns about the province’s existing penalties for violating fire bans. “The fines for starting fires during a ban are too low,” Hogan said. “We’re actively reviewing legislation to introduce more substantial penalties for those who put communities at risk.”

Current Wildfires

Three active wildfires are being closely monitored:

  • Adam’s Cove Fire
The largest of the three fires, the Adam’s Cove wildfire has now grown to 1,432 hectares, doubling in size since yesterday. Fortunately, the fire has spread inland and away from nearby communities. No additional property losses were reported overnight. Officials noted that the southern flank is under control, and favourable weather conditions are expected today. Fire crews will be supported by three water bombers, three helicopters, and ground teams.

  • Holyrood Fire
This fire experienced marginal overnight growth but crucially did not cross the highway. Crews will continue battling the blaze with one helicopter and ground support today.

  • Bay d’Espoir Fire
Currently burning 2.8 kilometres from the highway and about 20 kilometres from Grand Falls-Windsor, the Bay d’Espoir fire is being met with a coordinated response. Despite thick smoke in the area, favourable conditions are aiding efforts. The response includes a water bomber, helicopters, and additional assets from New Brunswick.

Nationwide Firefighting Resources Stretched Thin

Premier Hogan noted the broader context of a challenging wildfire season across the country, with over 800 active fires in Canada. “Resources are limited and stretched coast to coast,” Hogan said. “We’re thankful for the interprovincial support we’ve received so far and continue to work with national partners.”

The Premier concluded by urging all residents to follow fire bans and exercise extreme caution in forested areas. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
