Much-Needed Rain Set to Soak Newfoundland

After weeks of dry and dusty conditions across Newfoundland, a welcome change is finally arriving. Over the next 48 hours, a widespread rain system is expected to move in — bringing much-needed moisture to parched landscapes and easing wildfire concerns.

Rainfall Forecast (Sunday PM – Tuesday PM)

According to the latest ECMWF model guidance, here’s how the rainfall is shaping up across the island:

Central Newfoundland

This region is set to see the highest totals, making it the clear bullseye of the system.
Expected: 15–25 mm, with local hotspots (especially near Millertown, Buchans, and Badger) potentially reaching 30 mm. A major boost for stressed rivers and dry vegetation.

Western Newfoundland (Corner Brook to Codroy Valley)

A healthy soaking is on the way, with 10–20 mm forecast. The rain will help moisten forest floors and lower the wildfire risk that’s been creeping up in recent weeks.

Northern Peninsula (Anchor Point region)

Rainfall here will be lighter, with totals between 5–15 mm. Still, it’s a welcome drink for thirsty terrain.

Eastern Newfoundland (including St. John’s)

Eastern areas will be on the edge of the system and can expect 5–10 mm. While modest, it’s a step in the right direction after a prolonged dry spell.

South Coast & Saint-Pierre

Showers here will amount to around 10–15 mm, with some pockets of heavier rain possible.

While this system won’t fully erase the recent dry streak, it will bring meaningful relief — especially to Central Newfoundland. Rivers may rise slightly, forest fire risk will drop, and gardens will finally get a solid soak.

Keep an eye on conditions as the system progresses, and don’t forget to share your backyard rain totals! Every drop helps.
