Ode to Newfoundland Returns for MUN Convocation Ceremonies in May

Memorial University has issued another apology as it confirms the reinstatement of the Ode to Newfoundland at its upcoming spring convocation ceremonies.

University President Jennifer Lokash told VOCM News that the institution regrets the confusion caused by the previous removal of the Ode.

She clarified that the decision to exclude the Ode was made under the leadership of a “former-former president,” and doesn’t reflect the values or direction of the university today.

Back in 2023, then-president Vianne Timmons stated that the Ode to Newfoundland was not inclusive, which led to its removal from convocation ceremonies.

Lokash says the university plans to engage in broader consultation on decisions going forward.

“We acknowledge fully that the university has a lot of work to rebuild relationships with people who were negatively impacted by the initial decision—as well as anyone who may be disappointed or upset by the decision at Senate yesterday,” she said.

The Ode to Newfoundland will once again be sung during convocation ceremonies this May.
