Provincial officials offered an update this morning on the status of wildfires burning across the province, confirming there are currently no evacuation alerts or orders in place.
A province-wide off-road vehicle ban remains in effect, prohibiting ATV use on forested land. The restriction will be reassessed on August 17.
Kingston Fire
The Kingston Fire, now covering an estimated 6,400 hectares, has expanded on its northern edge. Crews have established fuel breaks in the north, while ground and air crews are actively working along the southern edge today.
Paddy’s Pond Fire
The Paddy’s Pond Fire remained very hot and smoky overnight, with growth recorded on its northern edge. The fire’s southern boundary is now approximately 250 metres from the Trans-Canada Highway. Fuel breaks are in place, and today’s suppression efforts involve ground crews, six water bombers, and members of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department.
Residents in the area are urged to remain prepared to evacuate on short notice. Officials warn that if an evacuation order is issued, residents will not be permitted to return home immediately.
Martin Lake Fire
The Martin Lake Fire remains west of Route 360, which will stay closed to traffic. The blaze is approximately 300–400 metres from the highway and covers around 800 hectares. Officials anticipate continued fire growth today.
Efforts on the ground include 30 firefighters, four helicopters, a bird dog aircraft, and additional air support. No structural losses have been reported at this time.
