Newfoundland and Labrador – In response to recent incidents involving roadside emergency personnel, RCMP Traffic Services is issuing a reminder to motorists about the importance of adhering to the province’s Move Over Law.
The law requires drivers to reduce their speed by 30 km/h below the posted limit when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with activated emergency lights. If another lane is available, drivers must also safely change lanes to give space to responders. In situations where no lane is available, motorists must stop and move into the opposing lane only when it is safe to do so.
Designed to protect those working in high-risk roadside conditions, the Move Over Law safeguards police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and tow truck operators.
“This law isn’t just about fines—it’s about lives,” said an RCMP spokesperson. “Too often, we see near-misses and close calls that could easily be avoided if drivers slowed down and moved over.”
RCMP urges all drivers to stay alert, follow posted signs, and respect the space of emergency workers.
Move over—it’s the law.
