Emergency crews in Avondale wrapped up their search last night after an extensive eight-hour effort failed to locate a reported person in distress.
The Avondale Volunteer Fire Department received a call just before 3:00 p.m. on Sunday after a homeowner reported hearing cries for help from the nearby woods. Upon arrival, firefighters also heard what sounded like calls for assistance, prompting a full-scale search effort.
Search and rescue teams combed through the area surrounding the ball field, Lee’s Pond, and Lee’s Pond Mountain but found no trace of a missing person. The search was eventually called off by the RCMP, who confirmed that no one had been reported missing before midday on Monday.
This is the second such case in recent weeks where emergency crews responded to a possible distress call but found no evidence of a person in need. In February, a similar search was conducted near Victoria following a report of a snowmobiler in distress, but no one was located.
Authorities are reminding the public to report any missing individuals as soon as possible and to remain vigilant when hearing potential calls for help.
