Wildfire Near Chance Harbour Prompts Precautionary Cabin Evacuations

CHANCE HARBOUR –  Crews made solid progress today in battling the wildfire near Chance Harbour, but shifting wind conditions expected tomorrow could pose new challenges.

Officials say strong north-northwest winds forecasted for Wednesday may drive smoke and fire activity toward the nearby communities of Jamestown and Winter Brook. While the fire is not currently expected to directly threaten homes, residents in both communities are urged to stay alert and be ready to evacuate on short notice if conditions worsen.

Cabin owners in the Great Chance Harbour area are being asked to leave the area by mid-morning Wednesday as a safety precaution.

Firefighting operations will continue with aerial support, including three water bombers, a bird dog aircraft, and helicopters, focusing on the southern and southeastern edges of the fire.

More favourable weather is expected to arrive by Wednesday evening and continue into the weekend, which should help crews in their suppression efforts.
