Forest Fire in Conception Bay North Grows Over 5,000 Hectares, Threatens Ochre Pit Cove

The provincial government has confirmed that a large forest fire in Conception Bay North has caused damage to several structures and may spread to the community of Ochre Pit Cove later this evening.

Premier John Hogan reports that the wildfire has now grown to cover over 5,000 hectares. The affected buildings are located in Adam’s Cove, Kingston, and Western Bay. Hogan expressed sympathy for those impacted but noted that due to ongoing firefighting efforts and heavy smoke, detailed information about the extent of structural damage is currently unavailable.

Regarding the Martin Lake fire, crews have successfully contained the northern perimeter and are focusing on controlling the southwestern edge, including nearby cabin areas.

In northern Labrador, the fire north of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, which was reported yesterday, is now extinguished. However, a new wildfire has been detected 19 kilometers south of the town, and firefighters are actively working to manage it. Both Labrador fires are believed to have been sparked by lightning.

Premier Hogan also highlighted challenges with resource availability from other provinces. While two firefighting aircraft from Quebec have arrived, two others were grounded due to maintenance problems. Additionally, two waterbombers from Ontario will not be deployed because of active wildfires there.

To help fill the gap, Hogan announced that a high-capacity helicopter, capable of dropping 1,000 gallons of water, is expected to arrive tomorrow to support containment efforts.
